strong linkage among various water and sanitation actors on February 5, 2008.

|
On the launching workshop held at CRDA conference hall, Ato Assfaw Dingamo, Minister of Water resources
in his opening speech, said that Water and sanitation is a major issue in our country in terms of
reducing poverty and improving the livelihood of the poor, particularly women and children.
“Access to clean water and sanitation stands at 52.5% and 38% respectively, which is by far the lowest
even by Sub Saharan average,” said Asfaw adding, “ This reality in our country requires the concerted and

He further expressed his conviction that the forum will have great contribution in coordinating and
enhancing the contributions of the Civil Society Organizations working in the Water, Sanitation and
Hygiene sub sectors.
The Forum will also be an important platform for experience and information sharing for its members,
according to Ato Asfaw, who also assured that his Ministry is committed to continue supporting and
working together with the newly established Forum.

Delivering a keynote address, Wz Semira Alhadi, CRDA’s A/Director, on her part said that the forum would
serve as a convenient platform to interface with the government and other actors working in the sectors.
She added that the establishment of the Forum would also create synergy by avoiding redundancy of efforts
and wastage of scarce resources. Moreover, civil society organizations working in the Water, Sanitation
and Hygiene sectors will have common voice in matters of mutual concerns.

She also noted that the challenges in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene sector in Ethiopia are so immense
and can't be overcome by separate individual contributions of the various actors in the sector.
According to Wro Semira, “It requires a united and coordinated effort from all stakeholders to make a
meaningful change. In this regard the Water Working Group of CRDA used to play a significant role in the
past.”
Representing the Development Assistance Group on Water, Mr. Antti Rautavaara, Co-Chair of DAG Water, said
the launch of the forum is an important achievement for the sector and “we look forward to hearing what
the elevated status from working group will mean, and how we can respond to that.”
Rautavaara mentioned that the changes have created an opportunity for stronger and more regular dialogue
with government and donors and for building capacity in the sector. He added that they will also throw up
challenges such as developing new ways of working at grass-roots level.
Representatives of CSOs /NGOs, donor organization and the government attended the launching event.
