The Civil Societies in Combating Ebola

Participants of the Workshop on Ebola

Ebola hemorrhagic fever or simply Ebola is a disease of humans and other primates caused by an Ebola virus. Symptoms being two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Typically vomiting, diarrhea and rash follow along with decreased functioning of the liver and kidneys. People who are affected by the virus may begin to bleed both within the body and externally. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 50% to 90% people infected with the virus.

Orientation workshop on Ebola was held at CCRDA on February 10, 2015. The workshop was organized by the Ethiopian Civil Societies Health Forum (ECSHF).

While opening the workshop, Public Health Emergency Advisor with Ethiopian Public health Institute (EPHI), Dr Merawi Argaw said, Ebola is a national issue and canĺt be curtailed and controlled by the Minisrty of health alone but requires the joint cooperation of all ministries of the government. He further said that the objectives of the orientation workshop, as seen by the Ethiopian public health institute (EPHI), are to brief the civil society sector (CSS) on the preparedness of the government of Ethiopia with regard to Ebola, to actively seek and secure the cooperation and participation of the CSS in the national endeavor to combat Ebola and to encourage the CSS to get involved in sensitization, mobilization and training of communities in rural and urban parts of Ethiopia.

He said the government has been prepared both at federal and regional level, while two Emergency Hospital Units (EHU) are ready to take care of Ebola cases in Addis Ababa. The EHUs are fully equipped and ready for any emergency instigated by an Ebola outbreak in Ethiopia. According to Dr. Merawi, once Ebola breaks out, it will become a national security issue, and hence is treated by the government of Ethiopia with utmost attention, while the Deputy Prime Minister Ato Demeke Mekonnen is heading the National Ebola Preparedness Taskforce. He underlined the need for NGOs to participate in the effort to raise awareness about Ebola.

He told the participants about the extreme care the Ethiopian government is taking to prevent the occurrence of Ebola in Ethiopia. He said passengers are tested on their arrival at Bole International Airport. And during the African Union Summit held in January 2015, the delegates of all countries were tested twice a day for Ebola.

Several questions were raised by the participants of the workshop.
