Addis Ababa Civil Society Urban Renewal Committee (ACSURC) is on track to transform into the Housing
Forum as the problem of housing in Ethiopia is so vast and needs strong and sustainable institutional
arrangement to realize its objective.
In the strategic planning workshop held at CRDA on May 14, 2008, participants, after conducting active
discussion and enriching the draft strategic plan, agreed to exert their effort to transform ACSURC into
a Housing Forum.
They have also agreed to avail the final strategic plan document of the transformation by May 21, 2008.
In his opening speech, Dr. Meshesha Shewarga, Director of CRDA, noted that CRDA has so far been making
valuable contribution to the committee and vows to further strengthen its organization’s support to
ACSURC for its transformation to the Housing Forum and for the realization of the Strategic Plan.
He also hoped that when implemented the strategic plan will have significant contribution towards the
reduction of the current vast housing problems and creating opportunity of providing affordable housing
for the poor.
W/rt. Tsion Desalegn, Coordinator of the ACSURC said in the workshop that since the research conducted in
2007 entitled ‘Consequences of the Condominium Housing Project in Addis Ababa with a Focus on Housing
Access to the Poorest in the City’ and the discussions and the dialogue held afterwards indicated that
the problems of the housing in Addis Ababa are wide and deep-rooted, it needs a concerted effort to
alleviate the deteriorating housing situation particularly for the vulnerable and poor people.
According to her, the strategic plan was prepared based on the research findings and recommendations to
strategically advocate for adequate housing for the poor and other vulnerable groups.
Members of International and National NGOs and Community Based Organization were participated in the
one-day strategic planning workshop organized by ACSURC-CRDA.
