Observations on the Draft CSO Law by Kumlachew Dagne
DISCLAIMER: THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IS NOT NECESSARILY THE VIEW OF CRDA OR ITS CONSTITUENTS. IT IS AN
OBSERVATION SUBMITTED BY AN INDEPENDENT LEGAL CONSULATANT.
The new draft Charities and Societies Act has become the most topical issue among the Ethiopian civil
society, member and non-members of CRDA alike. This comes as no surprise, taking into account the fact
that the draft law shows, both in the drafting process and in substance, a radical departure from
previous attempts on the part of the Ministry of Justice to come up with a law for the regulation of
CSOs/NGOs in Ethiopia...

CRDA North America Branch (CRDANA) |
| |
CRDA North America is
part of CRDA Ethiopia, an ambitious initiative to strengthen the global
Ethiopian community so that individually and collectively we can make a
positive contribution to the world in which we live without marginalizing
our history, culture, and connection with Ethiopia.
The very idea of accomplished Ethiopians from around the world
participating in the development of their motherland has the potential to
revolutionize the Ethiopian concept of voluntarism and social
responsibility For a nation plagued by a desire to leave, the return of
non-resident Ethiopians and their children to serve Ethiopians a subtle,
but powerful statement. When joined by their brothers and sisters in
Ethiopian taking responsibility for progress, the collective power to
transform our country becomes an unmistakable reality.
There is no question that Ethiopia has the intellectual capital and
physical resources to become a strong developed nation. By encouraging
civic participation within Ethiopia and reconnecting committed persons to
Ethiopian origin to Ethiopia through service, CRDA North America hopes to
make a humble contribution to Ethiopians’ development.
Small scale success can revitalize the idea that every individual can make
a difference in our country.
Our dream is to galvanize a movement where Ethiopians around the world
give back to Ethiopia through grassroots service and help awaken the
spirit of Ethiopia, one person at a time.
In the next few years, CRDA North America as a branch to CRDA Ethiopia,
aims for its expatriate programs to complement a largely domestic
initiative utilizing the tremendous talent and energy within Ethiopia’s
own borders by launching large-scale domestic service programs.
Such an exhibition of civic participation and collective social
responsibility within Ethiopia will help renew faith in the concept that
one person can make a difference.
